Who could believe that a small grayling fry would like such an environment?
However, the fact is that the stones on the relatively shallow shore offer protection against the hard waves and make the environment closest to the shore almost undisturbed.
It is shallow. It is a pebble beach. It is empty and near a strait leading to the open sea. Nowadays this is a protected bay that soon will become a flada. This is no habitat for the sea-spawning grayling, although many fully grown graylings are caught here, especially in the late winter. Picture: R. Hudd.
In order to be able to film grayling fry in their natural environment, we had to remove stones from the sea bed. Otherwise the camera would not have reached under the surface. On this occasion the water level was high, and the sea water reached up to the vegetation on land.

In order to make photographing easier a plastic cover from a plastic box has been placed under the grayling fry. Approximately in the middle of the picture you can see 5 grayling fry.

Flat rocks are no grayling fry habitats, although almost all other criteria for grayling fry habitats are fulfilled. However, we found a number of vendace fry at this location. Tavastögern 2003.
